English Title: Stormy Waters
Director: jean grémillon
Run Time 1h 25mins (black & white)
A tempestuous love triangle in classic French style. Claustrophobic, meticulously crafted, and dominated by two great French stars of the time; Jean Gabin and Michéle Morgan.
An atmospheric tale of the romantic trials of a tugboat captain, played by the iconic French star Jean Gabin, a man of courage and duty who leads a hard life. For him and the other members of the Cyclone’s crew, existence is harshly divided between the danger of the stormy seas and the safety of life at home with their patient women. When Gabin’s character André meets temptation in the form of the alluring Catherine during a risky rescue, he comes perilously close to betraying his wife of ten years.
Described as a timeless masterpiece, Remorques reunites the legendary couple from the pre-war classic “Quai des Brumes”; Jean Gabin and Michèle Morgan. Director Jean Grémillon was a filmmaker with a love of the sea and a background in documentary filmmaking, and here he uses beautiful tracking shots and extraordinary special-effect works to depict emotions swept away by the forces of nature. The incredible shooting of this film began in July 1939 and then had to continue at a brisk pace until September 1941, under the Occupation, earning it legendary status.
