Welcome to the Malvern French Film Centre

The Malvern French Film Centre shows French films on the big screen once a month from September to June each year, in association with the French Institute’s IF Cinéma and Arts Alive. Each April we run The Malvern French Film Festival, a six-film weekend of themed French films. We are proud to be recognised as a regional centre for French cinema by the Institute Français du Royame Uni. All films are shown with English subtitles and are screened in Malvern Theatres‘ Studio One, Grange Road, Malvern, WR14 3HB.

Our next screening is

La Reine Margot (18) 1994

on Sunday June 14th at 3.15pm and 6.45pm

Two hours of stabbing, shooting, goring, poisoning, incest, beheading and defenestration. A lavish and spirited adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’s novel that brings French history kicking and screaming onto the screen, although both film and novel are accepted as rambunctiously fictional versions of history

Marguerite of Valois, known within her family as Margot, was queen of Navarre from 1572 and of France from 1589. She was famed as a poet, a leader of fashion and a political operator. After her death in 1615, she achieved further fame when her juicy memoirs were published. Dumas wrote his version 300 years later and runs fast and lose with the facts, as does the film, to great and gory effect.

She is beautiful, she is catholic, and she is the King’s sister. She is Margueritte de Valois and is forced to marry Henri de Navarre. He is protestant and said to be ill-mannered, unshaven and to smell of garlic and sweat. It is a political manoeuvre: they need to reconcile France, torn apart by religious wars. Six days after the marriage at the Notre Dame Cathedral the Saint Bartholomew day massacre is unleashed on the protestants in Paris. In the middle of this night of horror, a young man wounded by several sword injuries, frantically knocks on Margot’s door; La Môle because he is protestant must die like all the others. Margot hides him, nurses him and grows to love him. That night everything is thrown into confusion.
