Ma Nuit Chez Maud 1969 1h 50mins

This is the film that truly launched Rohmer’s career as a filmmaker. Filmed in pinsharp black and white by renowned cinematographer Nestor Almendros, it stars Jean-François Trintignant as an engineer newly arrived in the town of Clermont-Ferrond who bumps into an old friend in a bookshop. This friend introduces him to the bewitching brunette Maud but he has already seen blonde Françoise at church and decided he wants to marry her. Will he be tempted by Maud?

Eric Rohmer grouped his many films into series that all work away at an ethical/moral philosophical issue. Ma nuit chez Maud showcases his ability to combine deep philosophical reflection; how should one live one’s life and what roles should our political and religious ideals play in our decision making? This is another of his “Six Moral Tales”, told with acute topographical realism as he follows his narrator through the narrow streets of Clermont-Ferrand.
