Pauline À la plage 1983 1h 35mins
Pauline at the Beach is perhaps one of Rohmer’s most accessible films and a great start for Rohmer beginners, a romantic comedy full of wit and tenderness that captures France in the 1980s perfectly.
Teenager Pauline goes on holiday to the Normandy seaside resort of Granville with her glamorous older cousin Marion. Marion is recently divorced and looking for love. The pair encounter Pierre, an old lover of Marion’s on the beach, as well as an overly-charming stranger, Henri, and a teenage boy, Sylvain. Marion soon falls for Henri, much to her ex-boyfriend Pierre’s chagrin. Meanwhile, Pauline begins her own holiday romance with Sylvain and experiences her first real heartbreak. When Henri spends the afternoon with another woman he makes it look as though it is Sylvain, rather than him, who has been unfaithful. Marion and Pauline have to decide who they are going to believe. Misinterpreted events, cunning characters, and the heat of the Normandy beach propel the film forward in what is an uncharacteristically dynamic Rohmer film.
