THE COACH HOUSE THEATRE GRANGE ROAD, MALVERN
(BEHIND THE CAR PARK NEAR MALVERN THEATRES)
The Coach House is a small theatre (seating capacity 60 – 70) in the middle of Malvern, which has provided a setting for a wide variety of drama and musical presentations since it opened in 2006. The Malvern Theatre Players is the resident company, and they put on three plays a year of a near-professional standard, including a play aimed at families for two weeks at Christmas.
The Coach House is a registered Charity, whose objectives are to provide a high quality performing space for groups both amateur and professional, and also to look after and maintain a historic building in the centre of Malvern. As its name implies the building was once coach house to a nearby mansion. When the group that now runs it began to take an interest the building was in a sorry state and being considered for demolition. Initially the MHDC was persuaded to allow it to be used for scenery building in return for a small rent and some work on the structure. Now the Coach House has become a successful theatre, the building is fully restored and improved, and the charity owns the freehold. Thus a far-sighted initiative has rescued a historic building and turned it into an excellent extra amenity for Malvern and its inhabitants.
A few years ago the Coach House installed equipment enabling it to show films to a professional standard. After consideration it was decided to make use of this by presenting the best of French cinema to Worcestershire and West Midlands audiences.
